NAVIGATING SUMMER TRAVEL AND NAPS: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

Summer is already in full swing, and with it comes the excitement of travel and often the challenges of managing naps, bedtimes and the heat for our little ones. Whether you're heading out for a family vacation or just a weekend getaway, it's essential to keep your baby or toddler's sleep routine in mind while also addressing the added challenge of summer temperatures. Here’s a practical guide to help you manage naps and keep your child comfortable during summer travels.

1. Plan Ahead for Naps on the Go

Travelling can disrupt your child’s usual sleep routine, but a bit of planning can help maintain their schedule. Here are some tips:

  • Stick to a Routine: Try to keep naps and bedtime as close to your home schedule as possible. Consistency helps your child feel secure and makes it easier to adjust to new environments.

  • Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: Bring along familiar items such as a favourite sleep sack, familiar crib sheet, lovey/stuffy (if age appropriate), white noise machine and of course, black out blinds!  These items can help your child adjust to new surroundings more easily.

  • Use Portable Napping Gear: A travel crib or portable playpen can provide a familiar sleep space. If you're flying or have limited luggage space, consider a lightweight, portable play yard.

2. Adjust to Different Time Zones

If you’re crossing time zones, your child’s internal clock will need some time to adjust. Here’s how to ease the transition:

  • Gradual Shifts: If possible, start adjusting your child’s sleep schedule a few days before you travel. Shift nap times and bedtime in 15-30 minute increments toward the new time zone.

  • Maintain a Bedtime Routine: Keep your child’s bedtime routine consistent, even in a new environment. This signals to your child that it’s time to wind down, no matter where you are.

3. Managing Summer Heat

Summer heat can affect your child's comfort and sleep. Here’s how to keep them cool and comfortable:

  • Dress Lightly: Dress your child in lightweight, breathable clothing. Opt for fabrics like cotton that help with air circulation.

  • Stay Hydrated: Make sure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day. If your child is still nursing or bottle-feeding, offer extra feedings to keep them hydrated.

  • Create a Cool Sleep Space: Keep the sleeping area well-ventilated. Use a fan to circulate air and consider a portable air conditioner if you’re in a hot climate.

  • Sun Protection: When out and about, use sunglasses and hats to protect your child from direct sunlight. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin, and seek shade whenever possible.

4. Stay Flexible

Remember, travelling can bring unexpected changes. It’s important to stay flexible and adjust as needed. If your child’s nap schedule gets disrupted, try to fit in a nap or an earlier bedtime to help them catch up on rest.

5. Keep Calm and Enjoy

Lastly, enjoy the journey! Summer travels are a wonderful opportunity for family bonding and new experiences. By preparing ahead and keeping your child’s needs in mind, you can make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

I hope these tips help you manage naps and keep your child comfortable during your summer adventures.

Safe travels and sweet dreams!
